| Sometime in the near future, countries have been falling into disrepair. Modern industry gives way to basic trading between territories. As government bonds start to break, the world starts to fall into the hands of criminals. The most popular activity in the world is now pirating on the open sea. As the only major form of business left is trading, pirates gain an easy living. One day, everything changed. As a group of pirates took over a major territory's shipping barge, something made the world shake. Everyone on the planet stopped what they were doing to find out what was going on. Next to the shipping barge, a huge astral figure rose out of the ocean. The floating figure appeared on every television in the world. Then, she started to speak. "The Earth is rampant with rage and destruction. Order has ceased to exist. I am Gaia, Earth's last defense against its own. A sense of unity needs to be established. The Earth needs a leader. Therefore, a quest will be asked of anyone who wishes to participate. Scattered across the Earth are ancient relics called World Runes. Each time a human finds a rune, they become the owner. There are twenty-five major runes and many minor runes. As each rune is collected, a territory around it will be granted to the owner. These owned territories will appear on any world map. To gain ownership of the land, defeat the others who have the rune for that area. To become the Rune King, gain ownership of the territory of all twenty-five major runes. Whom among you will fight to rule the world?" The figure slowly disappeared, leaving the people of Earth shocked. Suddenly, the world sprang back into action. Soon, pirate crews were being formed to find the runes and fight with each other. They all adopted the practice of naming the crews after their captain's last name. They listed the name twice, one word right after another. As the first rune was found, all firearms in the world melted away, leaving these words from Gaia. "The runes grant humans special powers. They no longer need weapons like these. The first rune has been found. It has begun." Of all of the leaders of the pirate groups, a young boy of 16 decided he would become the king of the world.
